Data storage in the surveillance world is undergoing a major revolution. With an increased focus on capturing and managing digital information, some of the old methods of storing and archiving video footage can no longer address new business requirements. While storing information is an essential part of the overall solution, it is very expensive and, therefore, important to make sure that it delivers both short-term and long-term value.
Today's large data centers have driven technology vendors to produce lower cost storage systems. These systems must be capable of handling the explosion of data created by rich-media applications and the regulatory requirements surrounding file and e-mail management. Tape technology once offered the only practical solution available, but, in today's business climate, businesses and government institutions need to consider not only acquisition price, but the overall cost of management resources. With budget constraints, they also must evaluate the versatility of their decision to get the most out of every dollar spent.
