Problem: Non-rugged laptops took a beating; paperwork processed at the station
The Florida Highway Patrol was using traditional, non-rugged laptops for in-vehicle use by troopers since 2001. While these laptops worked fine initially, they frequently experienced hard drive and screen failures due to extreme heat, vehicle vibration (officers often drive over medians) and moisture from the high humidity experienced in Florida.
Major Williams found that, on average, traditional laptops were replaced every two years, experienced frequent downtime and required repairs every couple of months. "The heat, vibration and moisture were wreaking havoc on the laptops, so we wanted to find a ruggedized computer that could withstand these demanding conditions."
Mounting laptops in vehicles posed other problems: Officers had the cumbersome task of installing the laptop and several peripheral devices each time they prepared to depart the station. Officers use a printer and a card reader, in addition to the standard power cord for each laptop. Installation of a laptop into the vehicle was time consuming, and improperly inserted cables frequently resulted in broken motherboards and USB ports.
