AS&E Introduces ZBV Military Trailer At 2007 Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED VI)

Stafford, VA — American Science and Engineering, Inc. (AS&E®), a leader in X-ray detection technology, recently introduced the ZBV Military Trailer™ — a militarized version of the company's patented Z® Backscatter Van™ (ZBV™) cargo and vehicle screening system.

AS&E is demonstrating the new ZBV Military Trailer for the first time at the 2007 Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED) VI, being held this week (August 14-16) at the Stafford Regional Airport, Stafford, Virginia. FPED provides civilian and military members of the Department of Defense and other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies with the opportunity to become familiar with commercially-available force protection equipment.

Anthony Fabiano, AS&E President and CEO commented, "We are pleased to unveil a new rugged platform for the ZBV — the world's top selling non-intrusive mobile X-ray cargo and vehicle inspection system. The ZBV Military Trailer is designed to meet the evolving security requirements of the military for both counterterrorism and force protection applications. Like the ZBV, the system is easily relocatable in mission-critical areas and produces photo-like X-ray images of vehicles and other objects for rapid threat analysis. AS&E's exhibit at FPED will showcase the system's capabilities as a force protection solution for revealing explosive threats and contraband."

About ZBV Military Trailer
American Science and Engineering's ZBV Military Trailer is a rugged X-ray screening system built onto a standard military trailer. With one-sided, Backscatter imaging, security officials can use ZBV Mil Trailer for screening vehicles, containers, and other cargo for terrorist threats and contraband — simply by towing the trailer past the subjects, or by remaining stationary while vehicles drive past the trailer. The ZBV Mil Trailer employs AS&E's patented Z Backscatter technology, which produces photo-like images of the contents of a container or vehicle, highlighting organic materials such as explosives. Development of the ZBV Military Trailer was supported by a November 2006 R&D contract for $2.2 Million to deliver a ruggedized ZBV for the U.S. Government. The ZBV Mil Trailer is ideal for screening vehicles for car and truck bombs.

Forwardscatter
ZBV Mil Trailer also includes Forwardscatter technology to complement Z Backscatter imaging. Forwardscatter presents a second scatter perspective that displays dense objects in cargo, such as the shielding found around nuclear WMD. With ZBV Mil Trailer in stationary scan mode, Forwardscatter detectors are positioned opposite the X-ray source in the trailer. The Forwardscatter image is displayed simultaneously with the Z Backscatter image, providing the operator with more information on the contents of a scanned vehicle.

About 2007 Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED VI)
The 2007 Force Protection Equipment Demonstration (FPED VI) is where American industry and firms from around the world demonstrate their best available force protection equipment at Stafford Regional Airport, Stafford, VA, and Marine Corps Base, Quantico, VA. FPED VI will be the sixth edition of the event, which has been produced every two years since 1997. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at that time determined there was a need for heightened awareness of commercial off-the-shelf equipment and systems for continually evolving threats against U.S. personnel and interests. Nearly 600 exhibitors will display and demonstrate more than 3,000 items of equipment and systems at Stafford Regional Airport.
