UQM Technologies Receives U.S. Navy Contract To Develop Advanced Electric Motor

Frederick, CO - UQM Technologies, Inc., a developer of alternative energy technologies, announced recently that it has received a $100,000 contract from the U.S. Navy under the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop an advanced electric motor that substantially improves the torque density, power density and efficiency over that currently available. The project is focused on developing compact high torque variable speed motors for the wide range of propulsion and power generation requirements of the Navy's vehicles and fleets.

"This project will explore the potential of an innovative motor design that combines the torque production of both permanent magnet and reluctance motor technologies," said Jon Lutz, UQM Technologies' Vice President of Technology. "Through a novel motor geometry, we hope to maximize both the torque and speed output of the motor and expand the output speed range beyond that of our currently available industry-leading technology."
