Beyond RFID 101: Taking RFID Applications To The Next Level

Publicity for RFID concentrates on inventory management applications like the famed Wal-Mart initiative. This is a dreadfully limited and restrictive focus of the possibilities this technology can provide. Although the Wal-Mart initiative brings attention to RFID and increases component volumes, the functionality that Wal-Mart requires is specific only to the Wal-Mart ROI model. RFID, however, has many features and applications with significantly more ROI possibilities.

For instance, electronic vehicle registration (EVR) is an innovative application with one of the clearest ROI propositions available. EVR is an incredible technology that, when properly implemented, represents a significant reversal in revenue losses. These losses are caused by many, if not all of the following routine occurrences happening in their jurisdictions.

  • Vehicle registration fraud either through vehicles driven in municipalities that are unregistered, or vehicles being driven with stolen, fraudulent or counterfeit vehicle registration.
  • Loss of revenue from public service employees in a jurisdiction not following standards for handing out fines for unregistered/illegally registered vehicles.
  • The loss of revenue from vehicles driven without annual environmental inspections. This does not include the huge environmental impact on the air we breathe from vehicles that do not pass this inspection.
  • Dynamic traffic patterning that reduces the cost of fuel, allowing public safety vehicles to arrive at their destination quicker, and reduces road rage and the high cost of traffic accidents.
