Identix Expands Mobile, Real-Time Identification Network to the Northwest

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 2003-- Portland, Oregon Police Bureau To Begin Initial Deployment of Identix IBIS Backend System and Handheld Remote Data Terminals Identix Incorporated (Nasdaq:IDNX), the world's leading multi-biometrics security technology company, announced today that the Portland, Oregon Police Bureau has awarded Identix a contract valued in excess of $200,000 for the initial deployment of Identix IBIS system to enable each of its five precincts to capture forensic-quality fingerprint images and photographs in the field for real-time, on-the-spot identification. Portland's deployment adds the Northwest United States to the existing IBIS network hubs already established in the Southwest in Ontario, CA and in the Midwest in Hennepin County, MN. Under the initial deployment, the Police Bureau will set up Identix' back end IBIS infrastructure to enable submission and transmission of rapid real-time identification from the field. Additionally, Portland will begin to distribute a small number of IBIS hand-held portable devices, called Remote Data Terminals (RDT), to each of the five precincts, which include investigative offices in the detective, gang enforcement, drugs and vice, and tactical operations divisions. Lieutenant Jeff Kaer, of the Bureau's identification division, commented, "Identix' IBIS system is an excellent tool for our department because it enables us to capitalize on Identix' technological advances to improve our officers ability to serve and protect the citizens of Portland. IBIS speeds up the process for the officer to confirm who they've stopped, and reduces mistaken identities on arrests. With shrinking budgets and shrinking staff, we believe our investment in IBIS will pay for itself in less than one year by making our officers more efficient and effective, enabling them to spend more time on the streets instead of at the precinct house processing suspects." Dr. Joseph J. Atick, President and CEO of Identix commented, "We have been working hard at building regional network capabilities for IBIS throughout the United States. We believe the Portland initial deployment network firmly establishes a foothold for IBIS in the Northwest region and is an excellent addition to our two existing networks in the Southwest and Midwest. We believe that IBIS is ideally suited for every law enforcement officer faced with the daily decision of believing a proffered identity and it is our ultimate goal to have an IBIS RDT on every police officer's utility belt. We will continue to work closely with Portland, Ontario and Hennepin to ensure that these leaders in technology adoption serve as examples for law enforcement agencies throughout the country." Identix' IBIS system uses a hand-held portable device, called a Remote Data Terminal, which will enable the Portland police to capture and wirelessly transmit a suspect's fingerprints and photographs for searches against the FBI's automated fingerprint database, as well as a database of seven western states, known as the Western Identification Network. The officer can check the person's criminal history and search for any outstanding warrants. If there is a match, the system returns the person's name, date of birth and mug shot directly to the officer's handheld terminal. If there is no match, the fingerprint and photo files are discarded from the system. Trials conducted at other agencies have demonstrated significant time savings for officers, keeping them from needlessly transporting suspects to a police precinct or jail to fingerprint them. The devices also provide officers on horseback, bicycles and motorcycles, who do not have the mobile computer terminals that patrol officers have at their fingertips, with the ability to access information on people they stop.
