Knowlton Machine Engineering (formerly known as Knowlton Machine Company) was operated for years as a general purpose machine shop. As such, in addition to conventional machining services, we performed a limited amount of fabrication, assembly, and design work. We also derived a significant amount of our business from our field services group which included valve rebuilding and in-place machining. Because our clientele at that time were primarily the paper mills and power plants throughout New England, we developed a very heightened sense of urgency, efficiency, and quality. These attributes served us very well then, and continue to apply to everything we do today. For the last five years, we took great pains to perform a very detailed self-evaluation, and used the results of that process to develop a very specific business plan. Although very detailed, this plan has two fundamental elements. First, we set out to build upon our traditional skills in order to broaden our expertise in a number of areas, particularly engineering and CNC machining. Second, instead of taking a shotgun approach to sales, we aggressively embraced the concept of forming strategic alliances with a limited number of key customers. In this way, we could spend more time and energy learning about each customer's specific needs and idiosyncrasies. This then allows us to configure ourselves perfectly to meet those needs. In short, we are now able to provide an exceptional degree of service to those customers who ally themselves with Knowlton Machine Engineering.
