L-3 Communications Wins $37.7 Million Contract to Provide Electro-Mechanical Bomb Fuzes

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 2, 2003--L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that its KDI Precision Products (L-3 KDI) business unit, has been awarded a $37.7 million firm-fixed-price supply contract for the procurement of FMU-139B/B electronic bomb fuzes. These fuzes will be utilized by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force and the governments of Egypt, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The contract, issued by Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, MD, also includes associated fuze accessory kits. The FMU-139B/B fuze is used to detonate general-purpose, air-delivered bombs and guided weapon systems, such as the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), immediately at impact, after a delay following impact, or upon a signal from a separate proximity sensor. It is an updated version of the FMU-139A/B fuze originally developed by Motorola and the U.S. Navy during the 1980's. L-3 KDI, along with its fellow "Team Fuzing" consortium members SEI SPA (Italy), Ordnance Technologies (UK) Ltd. and Kaman Corporation's Raymond Engineering and Dayron facilities, recently completed design and safety certification testing of an improved FMU-139B/B fuze. "The team started with the existing fuze design and made significant changes to eliminate component obsolescence, improve affordability and producibility and augment performance," said Eric Guerrazzi, president of L-3 KDI. As the prime contractor for this program, L-3 KDI is producing the fuzes in its Cincinnati, OH facility with substantial component production and fuze final assembly being done by Kaman's Dayron facility based in Orlando, FL.
