Understanding the Value of Net-Centric Warfare

Information is one of the most valuable commodities in warfare. Knowing the enemy's capabilities, location, movements and plans can help to neutralize the enemy. The ability to continuously know what is happening in the battlespace provides battlefield commanders with the situational awareness needed for effective combat maneuvers.

With such complexity, enabling the many functional areas to seamlessly communicate with each other is an extraordinary challenge. Geographic distance, differing standards and procedures, non-interoperability of devices and "cultural" factors are all contributors to these complex issues facing the warfighter. Net-centric warfare is about getting critical information directly into the right hands at the right time, often in real time and with appropriate levels of protection for that information.

Modern warfare is enabled by net-centricity — a globally interconnected network environment conducive to the seamless sharing of data among users, applications and platforms, such as the Global Information Grid (GIG). The end result is dramatically improved situational awareness and much shorter decision-making cycles, which may create effective results in the war on terrorism.
