RFID (radio frequency identification) is a technology that is being applied to the DoD supply chain for a simple reason: no human intervention is needed to identify a product moving through an RFID-enabled gate in the supply chain. The license plate information of the product is encoded in an RFID chip that can then be read when a tag moves through that gate. In March 2005 the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) launched a PDA pilot program that would help the agency achieve enterprise application integration. ITD's managers broke new ground by introducing PDAs and specialized software from MobileDataforce to field inspectors that would help achieve the agency's goal of implementing programs that use the latest technological advancements. The program provides mobile hardware and software to ITD's Maintenance Section to facilitate the collection and distribution of data on the maintenance of rest areas across the State's six regional districts.
